I bet many of you never realized that until last Monday, April 6, there wasn’t a single brick and mortar bank or financial institution Ward 8. I know some of you are thinking that can’t be right, but if you look at the actual boundaries of the ward, it’s true. That changed last Monday at 10:00am, as 7/17 Credit Union opened their first Akron location at 1 N. Hawkins, Suite 2 at the corner of N Hawkins and W Market( between Papa Gyros and Marco’s Pizza). You may have heard about 7/17 when they bought the naming rights to Canal Park downtown a few months back and I’m proud that they’ve chosen Ward 8 for their first Akron location.
While new to Akron, 7/17 Credit Union is based in Warren, Ohio and has been around for 69 years, originally started as the credit union for Packard Electric. I stopped in and met with Senior Vice President Brian Williams and Branch Manager Cheri Dodson to learn what sets 7/17 apart from other financial institutions. Brian mentioned they offer everything from youth accounts to commercial business accounts, and specialize in higher savings rate rates and lower loan rates than large banks. With a commitment to affordable housing, 7/17 offers 1% off mortgage rates for homes purchased in Akron, “Your Keys/ No Fees” program that eliminates closing fees on new homes, a Home Buyers savings account, with 7% interest, and auto financing rates at 2% lower than most banks.
The new location is bright, busy and welcoming, with plenty of off street parking. as /a Credit Union with Scale they offer the same services as larger banks and are linked with other credit unions across the county. Stop in and say hello to Cheri when you’re in the Wallhaven area and see what Akron’s newest Credity Union can do for you! Or you can check them our online at :
