Many of you have received a mailing from the City of Akron and Service Line Warranties of America (SLWA) offering optional exterior water and sewer house line insurance. I’ve had a number of folks who are unsure whether this may be worthwhile, or if the letter was a scam. This is a legitimate partnership between Akron and SWLA.
All homeowners are responsible for the water and sewer lines from their property line to their homes and the city is responsible from the property line out. You may remember a recent news story where a family whose sewer line needed repair and could not get help from for years. They came to council’s public comment section and it was heart wrenching to hear their story. Thankfully the city stepped in and repaired the sewer line, but this is not the norm. Sewer and Water line replacement costs can run up to $8000 or more, depending on the length of your yard.
Most homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover these repairs ( I know mine doesn’t) and because of this Akron has negotiated a discounted rate for all residents. The insurance coverage is $3.57/ for waterlines and $4.57/month for sewer. SLWA has the 30 day period for this offer so coverage can begin the program. Service calls are covered for up to $8500 per call for both water and sewer repairs. They will also help you find a reputable and licensed contractor and offer a 24 hour hotline to provide homeowners with the assistance they need for these emergency repairs.
I signed up last weekend (it only took a few minutes ), as I know my sewer lines are old and do not want to take the chance of getting hit with a costly repair. If you haven’t received the mailing you can learn more by calling 1-844-257-8796 or online at:
