With the heat and humidity we’ve had this summer, I am really looking forward to Summit Metro Parks Fall Hiking Spree that starts on September 1st. This is the 62nd annual Spree (it started in 1964) and is recognized as the longest running event of it’s kind in the nation. 558 Hikers walked the trails back in 1964 and it’s grown to over 50,000 participants in 2024 with around 15,000 hikers finishing all trails on the Spree. We’re fortunate that Summit Metro Parks Headquarters call Ward 8 Home on Treaty Line Road, just off the top of Portage Path Hill.
As I’ve said, Ward 8 is the greenest ward in the city and we’ve got trails from 3 of our Metro Parks in this year’s Spree. Sand Run, Hampton Hills and the F A Seiberling Nature Realm are yours to explore or revisit. This year’s spree runs from September 1-November 30, giving you plenty of time to wander the trails of 14 of our beautiful parks while enjoying the colors of fall. First time hikers who complete all 14 trails will receive a hiking staff and shield, and returning hikers earn the 2025 shield. Spree rewards are free to all Summit county Residents.
Here’s a link to more information on all the trails, and to sign up online. I hope to see some of you this fall!
