This summer we’ve seen a rash of car break-ins and  stolen cars throughout the city, especially in Parkway Estates,  and the Zahn-Cromwell neighborhoods. In Ward 8 alone, there's been 25 total  reports,  resulting in 28 offenses from June to August. The breakdown is; 18 theft from motor vehicle offenses, five  motor vehicle thefts, and five offenses of criminal mischief. More than half of these 25 cases occurred overnight and were reported the next morning. This is continuing into September and it appears to be groups of teenagers in dark colored hoodies who are the culprits.

There’s  even more reports of teenagers wearing hoodies, checking car doors all over the Ward. I’ve also heard from residents where cars were ransacked, but nothing was missing so they did not report this to the police. Akron police follow up on every report, investigate , and arrests have been made on some occasions. It is imperative that you report any suspicious activity to the  Police and if you have doorbell cameras, the photos and videos will help in solving these crimes. According to APD  Officer Aaron Brown, these criminals are looking and finding money, guns,  house keys and when cars are left unlocked, it makes it easier for them to gain access and possibly even steal your car. So remember to lock your cars, do not leave wallets, purses, keys or other valuables in your car.  Keep loose change  out of sight, store anything of value in the trunk or glove compartment.

Both APD and I are looking at forming Block Watches in these and all Ward 8 neighborhoods.  We’ll discuss  specifics on how you and your neighbors can take charge of your street to deter crime at September’s Ward Meeting on 9/17.
