By far, the number one complaint I hear from residents is about speeding on residential streets. I heard it while campaigning and knocking on doors, I get calls, texts, emails; there’s numerous Facebook posts weekly and I see it on my street every day. I’ve asked the administration repeatedly about this and recently met with the City Engineer, and Akron’s Directors of Traffic Engineering, and Development Engineering on December 2nd to talk about plans for slowing drivers down snd making our neighborhoods safer.
We all agree that we can never completely stop folks from speeding but in 2026 we’re looking at more permanent solutions, instead of the summertime speed tables in the past. Right now there are two speed tables in Akron through the winter to see how they hold up during snow plowing. We’re piloting a couple of permanent asphalt speed bumps for the same reason. If they do indeed hold up, we’ll see some in Ward 8 next year. We’re also looking at the possibility of raised crosswalks at school crossings, and more solar speed signs ( and rotating the current ones) for every ward. We even talked about adding small roundabouts instead of stop signs on streets that are wide enough for the circles.
So here’s where we need your help, click on the link below to request a traffic calming device on your street. And remember the old saying “the squeaky wheel gets the grease”? It definitely applies here as this survey goes direct to Akron’s Engineering team, so pass it on to your neighbors.
