With Council at Large Jeff Fusco retiring after 38 years of public service, Council has big shoes to fill in his replacement. Considering the wealth of knowledge and experience that Jeff brought to the table. He will be missed. Per City Charter, Council must appoint his replacement within 30 days as there is less than 2 years left in Jeff’s unexpired term, with a primary election a little more than a year away.
I’m one of the 5 members on the appointment committee, and feel my experience on both sides of this table give me valuable insight into the process, Council and the committee held a public forum on the appointment process last week at Firestone High School with about 70 or so residents from all over Akron. Folks had a chance to ask questions and comment on the process, and while some felt we need to elect the replacement, the City Charter is specific about how Council fills a vacancy.
Applications will be accepted until Friday April 17 at noon for Akron residents, including any current members of Council ( I am NOT applying, I’m quite happy here in Ward 8!) There’s a lot to consider as we hope to find someone with both knowledge and understanding of the issues facing the City, and experience working as a team. We also have to take into consideration the political aspect, as whomever is chosen will have to run city wide, which involves an incredible amount of work and funding. The Committee will interview all qualified candidates that apply and make a recommendation to all of Council for a vote on March 27
Interested individuals can email a cover letter stating interest and resume to Sara Biviano, Clerk of Akron City Council.
