December 23, 2025 marked a milestone for the City of Akron as we removed the final lead service line in our water system. This monumental project began back in the 1960’s and Akron is now one of a few midwestern cities that is completely lead free. Considering the size and age of our system, this is something that needs to be applauded. This good work continues today as Akron will eliminate the last of our galvanized service lines by 2027.
Lead is a potent neurotoxin than can cause irreversible harm especially in children. Back in 1964, David Crandell in Akron’s water department knew this and began replacing lines far before the Safe Drinking Act of 1986 outlawed installing lead lines. David became Akron’s Public Utilities Manger and continued to replace about 1,000 lines (many before streets were repaved) every year. He was the catalyst for this program, and for 36 years he made it a priority in budgets and with Mayors. Thanks go to each administration that followed in continuing this work. David was on hand to witness the completion of the project in November as crews removed the last lead service line.
I had the opportunity to work with David while I was chair of Council’s Public Utilities committee from 1992-1997, as he insisted on meeting weekly to explain pending legislation. I will never forget David’s knowledge, foresight, innovative ideas, dedication to the citizens of Akron. What I learned from these weekly cram sessions are applicable today and have given me a solid understanding of or water and sewer system. Sadly, David Crandell passed away just last week at the of 91, leaving a legacy as a true unsung hero in Akron’s progress.
