This winter really took its toll on city streets, with potholes and water main brakes, a number of our street are in rough shape. The good news is Akron plans to resurface 47 miles of roads and work has started this week. Most residential streets are resurfaced every 7 to 10 years with arterial and collector being paved more frequently.
City officials grade the conditions of our streets and then decide what streets are put on the list yearly. They also take into consideration other plans for projects, like sewer and water line replacements, underground utility work, and try to schedule the paving after these projects are complete. They then put together plans for primary programs, which will be paved this year and alternate streets, which could be this year if funding is available. If not these streets move to the next year‘s resurfacing program.
For 2026, $6.5 million budgeted for resurfacing with an additional $1.85 million for concrete pavement. In the past, the resurfacing program was bid to one contractor, but this year we’re using two separate contractors in hope that all streets will be resurfaced quickly. Kenmore construction is covering Wards 1,2,5,6 and 10 and Perrin Asphalt will handle wards 3,4,7 and 8. I know work has already begun in Fairlawn Heights, and throughout the city.
